Filipino Superstars James Reid & Nadine Lustre Are Using Music to Change the Way Their Culture ...

Here's what happened as a result of the Filipino tradition that forces superstars to date each other.

Becoming a big name in the Philippines comes with major strings attached. In exchange for doing what they love, stars are expected to be in a committed relationship. Once you make it, there's no standing alone -- the entertainment industry pairs celebrities together to create an ideal couple, referred to as a "love team."

Whether they have actual feelings for the other person or not, it's their job to sing, act and do everything together. Just imagine an alternate universe where Hollywood couples like Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber or Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth could only work exclusively with each other and were never supposed to break up. The idea is a longtime Filipino tradition that sadly limits artists from going after what they really want in their careers, but now there's a must-watch duo making a mark on their own terms.

James Reid and Nadine Lustre aren't your average pair. On top of proclaiming that their staged romance actually turned into a real one, "JaDine" as they're called, continue to shatter all stereotypes associated with their culture and the idea of celebrity relationships.

"We're expected to be perfect on and off-screen," Reid told Billboard Style. "I want to break out of that. Love teams are the very core of Philippine show business, but I want to re-define its meaning. I feel like we've been commercially molded to be this flawless couple, but I hope to give people something more."

Reid is making it his mission to give fans a deeper understanding of his one-of-a-kind love with Lustre through his music. Instead of following the theme songs of their soap operas and singing traditional ballads as a duet like most Filipino love teams, not only is Reid releasing music without his other half, he's delivering a modern, dance-inspired sound that sticks out from the country's other chart-toppers.

"At the same time, I've written several songs about her, for her and with her," Reid said of his latest album "Palm Dreams," which dropped in July. "What can I say? She's part of it all. This is also the first time I wrote love songs that I personally imagined, experienced and produced on my own along with my beat producer, Paulo Tiongson aka PoorTaste."

While Lustre is sticking to acting, her smiles on social media prove how much she supports him and it appears, she's not the only one. Reid surpassed huge stars like Justin Bieber and The Weeknd on the Philippines' Billboard charts proving the country is ready for his newfound approach. "I have another EP coming up with artists like Bret Jackson and Sam Concepcion," he revealed. "I'm also working on my new album that will come out next year. I found my voice now, so I need to take this opportunity to show people the change in the Philippines' music scene."
