Man, the world is full of haters. I can't believe the reception Joe Wright's
Darkest Hour received when it was announced it was nominated for the Best Picture and Best Actor Oscars. People were acting like it was some abomination against cinema. But it's really good! Not as good as Christopher Nolan's
Dunkirk (2017), but still an expertly made film. I loved how it reveled in details of his life: his servants' breakfast regime, his moments of silence on empty elevators, his moments of intense doubt. Oldman gives a tour de force performance that would be the stuff of legend even if he wasn't slathered in makeup. And though the scene where Churchill jumps on the Underground and holds court with a group of unsuspecting Londoners might strike some as cheesy, I thought it worked well. But a certain percentage of Film Twitter will always hate Great Man biopics. Their loss.
